Psalm 139 - Part 8

Psalm 139:6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.

{Knowledge is the theoretical or practical understanding of a subject.}

Show of hands, who has a practical understanding of God?

There are times I think I really understand why God does stuff and other times my mind just spins in circles.

Sometimes I am aware of how God searches me out, knows me fully, knows when I sit down and when I stand up. Knows all my deepest darkest thoughts, knows the words I will speak even before I know them and is fully surrounding me in guidance and protection (Psalm 139:1-5). Then other times I can’t seem to comprehend why, so I just stand in awe of His love for me.

That is such a cool aspect of God, He always brings us back to a place of worship.

I don’t know of anyone or anything that can do that.

Scripture says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my way, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9

This is where we relinquish the fact that we are never going to fully understand God.

We can’t put Him in a box, we can’t mold Him into what we think He should be. The 10% of our brain that we actually use will never grasp the complexity of its Creator.

Nor would God be worthy of our praise and worship if we could figure Him out.

That’s what makes God

the Almighty One,

the Alpha and the Omega,

the one who Was

and Is

and Is to come.

He is worthy of all praise because He is much greater than anything our minds could create.

Another definition for knowledge is,

{awareness or familiarity gained by experience of fact or situation}.

we are getting somewhere…

if we seek God, if we call out to Him, ask for Him to reveal to us the mysterious of His greatness and then open our hearts and minds to His truth then we will gain knowledge of Him through our experiences with Him.

For me personally, there is no book (besides the Bible) or sermon that has shown me who God is more than God Himself.

When I read the Bible, study the Word, and pray for God to help me understand it, He reveals it to me through daily living, experiences. Situations I go through, conversations with godly counsel, time in prayer and meditation on eternal things rather than things of this earth (Colossians 3:2) help me understand God’s ways.

We say, we can’t wait till we get to heaven to fully understand the ways of God. Honestly, I think, that once we get there it will no longer matter. All the knowledge will pale in comparison to the majesty of the Lamb.

Take that attitude now,

seek praise over a relentless drive for knowledge and see how God will reveal Himself to you.

Think Deeper:

I don’t know if this is stuff you have ever even thought about…do you even crave a knowledge of God?

Our world says that there is power in knowledge and in a society that has it all right at their fingertips we sure don’t know much at all.

We have tried to search it out on our own and now the Church as a whole is on the decline.

It’s time to turn the focus back on god, not just a knowledge of Him but to actually know Him.

Take some time in prayer to focus on God rather than yourself... ask for Him to reveal His ways and His will for your life.
